The right to vote is our most important right as Americans. Protecting that right, and ensuring fairness, accuracy and security is J.R.'s number one priority as Kansas Secretary of State. To protect our right to vote and the integrity of our elections, we must have a registration security program that keeps our vote secure and free from fraud.

Government spending is out of control. The spending spree must stop and government agencies need to be held accountable for efficiency and responsible stewardship of our tax dollars. We live within our means while politicians buy votes with our hard-earned money, growing an unimaginable debt for future generations.

Small businesses are the backbone of economic growth in our state. The more we have, the more jobs created. Adding additional burdens on these job creators only serves to slow economic growth. Business filings should be accessible via the internet and no business owner should be in a position to waste valuable time filing forms and paperwork.

J.R. continues to support efforts to engage members of the Armed Forces and their families in elections. The right to vote is too important to be mired in red tape. Only 17 percent of our military men and women eligible to vote participated in 2006. Those serving overseas to protect our way of life deserve easy accessibility to the right to vote.

Civic participation, whether it be in community groups, the PTA, or other worthy organizations, provides a strong foundation for involvement in our government. We can start by making sure elections are free, fair and accessible to everyone. There should be as little red tape between a voter and their ballot as possible.

Encouraging our children to be a part of our communities will both strengthen communities through participation and increase voter registration and turnout. Civic responsibility starts at home and should be reinforced at school. Participation in elections and civic groups is key to making our communities the envy of the world.
