Increasing Participation In Elections
Civic responsibility rises from our sense of shared ownership and responsibility to our community to participate in the decision-making process. Fostering civic responsibility and citizenship in children -- at home and in school -- will instill a sense of ownership, strengthen our communities, and ultimately increase voter registration and participation in elections. Here are the ways we will encourage voter registration and turnout: Ensure elections are free, fair and accessible No eligible voter will be turned away from the polls and every vote will be counted. We will promote alternatives (e.g., absentee ballots) for those who are unable to travel to the polls on election day and members of the Armed Forces. Close the civics literacy gap Invest in civics education and character programs to re-engage young people and their families into the electoral process. We have a responsibility to engage children in programs that stress the importance of community engagement. Expand Kids Voting Kansas Promote voting among our young people by expanding Kids Voting Kansas throughout the state. This program encourages civic participation by allowing children to vote in the polls with their parents. Voter outreach Reaching out to those who are of legal voting age to encourage registration and informing the voting public of election dates, times and procedure is key to increasing turnout. Support an informed citizenry In addition to publicizing election dates, times and procedures; the Secretary of State's office will provide public education opportunities with the goal of increasing awareness of electoral processes and procedures. Together we can make Kansas the greatest state in the nation through free, fair and accessible elections where everyone eligible participates. www.JoinJR.com Paid for by J.R. for Kansas, Inc., Mary Kay Hendrickson, Treasurer
