A Candidate Serving as a Voice for Kansas' Small Businesses
Thursday, April 15th, 2010

By J.R. Claeys

Economic recovery will not be found in the multi-billion dollar boondoggles handed down from the federal government. It will not be found in corporate bailouts where the federal government picks the winners and losers. Instead, this economic recovery, like so many in our nation's history, will be found in the spirit of America's 20 million small businesses -- businesses who employ over half of America's workforce and are responsible for the majority of private-sector job growth in our country.

Government at all levels is not friendly to small businesses. The red tape that has a minimal impact on a large corporation with HR departments and compliance officers has a way of choking a small business to death. Let's be clear: any regulation that affects a small business is a tax. Every hour taken out of a small business owner's day to comply with a new regulation is an hour that a small business owner is not spending growing their business, creating jobs.

That taxation is exactly why Kansas needs a secretary of state who understands that regulation, paperwork and fees are simply taxes on the businesses we are counting on to get our economy back on track.

We all know the secretary of state has an important duty in keeping our elections fair and free from fraud. But our next secretary of state must also be a voice for small business. As the business filing center for the state, the secretary of state's office can limit the number of hoops a small business must jump through and as a fee-based agency can limit the amount of money small businesses must pay in filing fees.

I've spent my entire adult career fighting for small businesses, advocating for regulatory reform, paperwork reduction and tax relief for small businesses. I've served as the CEO of a major national business association and worked with the Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy in the Bush Administration --positions where I fought for less government intrusion into the free market.

As secretary of state I will keep my eye on the ball when it comes to the duties of the office. There is no room for mistakes in our elections. There is no room for mistakes when it comes to the 100,000-plus small businesses that rely on the office to be efficient with their time and their money. I ask for your vote on August 3 for a candidate with the experience to run an office and the leadership to avoid costly mistakes. I'll cut red tape for small business and run free and fair elections for Kansas.
