A Couple Weeks Traveling In The Big First District
Friday, May 1st, 2009

By J.R. Claeys

Driving across the Big First District the past two weeks I met small business owners and professionals to hear their concerns about the economy in Kansas and the state of our elections.

If there's one thing I understand it's the burden placed on small businesses to complete piles of paperwork and measure up to innumerable regulations, all while paying unreasonable taxes. Oh, and running a business in our spare time. One reason I want to be the next Secretary of State is because this office can have an immediate and direct impact on how much time small businesses spend dealing with the government. One bureaucracy at a time, we can work together to make sure government is reasonable, responsible, and accountable to the people it serves.

Along the way I also met with county clerks to hear the challenges they are facing in running fair elections. Our elections officials are working under a set of bad laws that make their jobs more difficult than they need to be. It is clear to me, and to most Kansans, that we need a strong Voter ID program in our state. In the past few days two more state attorneys general filed charges against an organization that promoted and incentivized electoral fraud. The fraud is real and it is happening throughout the country.

Next week I'll be in the Wichita area and South-Central Kansas. The past two weeks I visited with friends and supporters in Salina, Great Bend, Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Russell, Hays, Colby and Goodland.
