Wyandotte County Republican Party Meeting
Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

By J.R. Claeys

This evening I spoke to the Wyandotte County Republican Party in Kansas City, Kansas. I arrived a little early to talk one-on-one with party members and was truly humbled by their kind and supportive words. Chairman Milton Hamm invited me to speak at the meeting and introduced me to the audience.

After speaking, I took a few questions and it is clear to me that Republicans in Kansas are concerned about the integrity of our elections. Security is job one for the next secretary of state. We are working under some bad laws, though. We need those laws changed. Voter ID and registration security is a big first step. We also need to give our county clerks and elections commissioners the tools they need to keep our voter rolls clean. Right now they scan obituaries to remove the deceased (there is a cutoff that may leave some on the rolls for Election Day) and they send mailings to begin a process of determining if people have moved. Simply put, that process allows too much time for a voter to be registered in two or more places.

As luck would have it, I was speaking at the same meeting as Wyandotte County Elections Commissioner Bruce Newby. Mr. Newby echoed my statements about Voter ID and explained what his office is restricted by law from doing when it comes to cleaning up the voter rolls. The answer isn't blaming Bruce, the answer is to change bad law to give Bruce the tools he needs to do the right thing.

After the meeting Bruce was kind enough to offer me a tour of his facility when the local elections are over this month.
